My Work
These have been my projects thus far...
01
Stamps
Our first task in class was to create six stamps, one of which had to be a signature of sorts. Though the suggested approach was to make the stamps so that they could imprint our future work, I wanted to make my stamps so I could stamp them on fabric with fabric paint and different textiles. I feel that with this method I will get more enjoyment and use out of my pieces. I created the mandatory signature stamp with the "s", a matchbox stamp, a pomegranate stamp, a die, a button, and a star. I really tried to lean into the randomness of my choice of design. I also utilized 3D and 2D elements to assure that my stamps actually stamp.
02
Relief Sculpture
This is my relief sculpture. I was attempting to create a depiction of Tim Button's famous movie "Coraline". It is one of my favorite films, partly due to the stunningly creepy visuals. I tried to make a youthful face with distinct button eyes. I haven't decided if I wasn't to glaze my face - or maybe just the buttons. Next time I would like to spend more time studying the movie and what a more youthful face's bone structure may look like.
03
Slab Work
This is my slab work project. For this project I wanted to make spoons, specifically stirring spoons for drinks. I also wanted a simplistic design so I chose, polka dots, stars, hearts, and flowers. I also decided to do them with underglaze to have a more muted finish, but I also plan to finish them with a clear gloss to make them more usable. If I were to attempt this project again I would want to make the spoon more valuable, and reshape them so they could be used like actual spoons.
04
Pinch Pot(s)
These are my pinch pot projects. I started with 3 pinch pots that I used as practice just to build them up and then cut them down the middle to test the symmetry. Then I made a straightforward pinch pot. I turned it into a mug, and now I am working on a double-pinch pot with a lid that I made. a small house that has a removable roof.
05
Pinch Pot w/ lid
This is my pinch pot with a lid. I created it by making three small square pinch pots and stacking one on top of the other to create height. I made the roof lid separately. My inspiration for this project came from tiny Scandinavian ceramic houses - but making the roof come off so I could use it for storage. There were a few things that went wrong with the project though, I accidentally painted the house with a blue glaze instead of the clear glaze with a blue finish. Also, the roof and the house got slightly misshapen, it looks like it's leaning forward. Overall I like this project because of the small details like the wrap-around brick and the shingles on the roof but I am disappointed with the color and how the house looks like it's leaning.
06
Animal Project
This is my animal projcect. for this poject I made four sardines and a sardine tin. I had to remak this project completly because teh origional got to hard to work with. Most of the time that was spent on this project was with painting the fish. The sardines have five different glazes on them, a base of white, a grey and white mixture for tails and ridge, peach for the mouths and underbelly, black for detailing, and opulence for a scaley finish. I am really happy about how the fish turned out disappointed by the can. I used gloss glazes and they kinda bled also I made a black/white mixture for the body of the tin and I feel it is too dark. I wish I made a cap for the rolled-over bit on the lid and I wish the fish could fit inside. But, overall I love this project because it was really fun to make.
07
Monster Project
This is the process of my monster project. It has been fired but not fully glazed yet. This project took some time because I had to keep changing monsters because someone already had mine. Also, I had trouble buiding teh head of the monster. I ended up making about five heads just for this project and scraping them. One aspect I like about this projcet is the rock and the details on it. The moster I had was a floating mermaid but with ocean life on the sea floor. I thought that by putting the mermaid on a rock I could make it much easier and I could include some details. I made barnicles, a starfish, a fish, some shells and more. I also like the hair which I imporvized on and tried to make it look like seaweed.
08
Relief Tile
This is the process of my relief tile, it has not been fired yet because I wanted to add some cool seed details on the pomegranate. I am hay with the shape and depth so far but I definitely want to spend more time on this project.
09
Slump Mold
This is my slump mold project. It is in the kiln but has not been glaze fired yet. I used a fish mold to form my piece and let it dry for two days. After, I took it out and pocked holes at the top so I could use it for wall art. After it comes out of the kiln I plan to do a cool design with the scales.
10
Sgraffito Project
These Are the pieces that I will use for my sgraffito work. I made the base and handle for a mug and a simple plate. I plan to do reds and pink with heart designs for the mug, and grees and blues with bubble/polka dot designs when they come out of the kiln. These pieces are still in progress.
